Hokes Bluff Middle School still shut down

Posted: Updated:

Most students from Hokes Bluff Middle school are back to class but in a different building.

The 6th graders met at Hokes elementary school. The 7th and 8th graders met at 1st Baptist Church at Hokes Bluff.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused more than two dozen people to get sick that even left some people with skin rashes, many were sent to the hospital.

Monday afternoon, school leaders and public health officials addressed the media and said patients have been discharged from the hospital with no signs or symptoms.

Robbie Stubbs with public health says, "We're still gathering data, we've surveyed the patients and we have several departments in Montgomery working on the investigation including toxicology and epidemiology."

But the results still aren't in, which is why students aren't inside the building.

Alan Cosby with Etowah Board of Education says environmental engineers have been on site taking air samples and mechanical tests.

Meantime students will continue to meet at Hokes elementary and 1st Baptist Church until the cause of sickness is determined.
