DRMC Says Flu Cases Are Significantly Up

Danville, VA - Danville Regional Medical Center has seen a rise in the number of patients with flu symptoms recently, and they want to make sure you know it's not too late to get the vaccine.

DRMC's Chief Medical Officer spoke about how most of the patients that have come in with flu symptoms have not gotten the vaccine, but they want to stress that it is not too late.

DRMC says they've had a significant increase of flu patients in both their clinic and ER from last year. The big concern for them is that half of the people diagnosed with the flu recently are children.

In fact, some are infants and too young to get vaccinated. That's why the school suggests that everyone, especially people around children get the flu shot.

Along with getting others sick, it also makes it difficult for them to treat every other patient in the hospital, who has severe issues like heart attack or stroke.

"We as an emergency room are trained to triage patients and make sure the most severe illness receives the treatment as quickly as possible so we avoid missing any of those illnesses," said Saria Saccocio, Chief Medical Officer.

They also suggest you wash your hands frequently and stay at home if you're sick. DRMC has not limited visitation yet, but they ask that if you do not have to be at the hospital, don't come.
