Target data breach: What you need to know

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Target data breach may have compromised credit and debit card information for 40 million customers. It may extend to nearly all of the 1,800 store locations.

Target says it happened between November 27 and December 15. This includes Target's REDcard as well as debit and credit cards. This affects in-store purchases only.

Compromised information, according to Target, may include the customer name, card number, and the card's expiration date and security code.

If that has you worried, here is some information that may help.

First, security experts are recommending that you keep a close eye on your statements and check your credit report.

If you discover or suspect something fishy, call your bank or credit card company. The contact number should be on the back of the card.

For REDcard holders, you can contact Target by calling 866-852-8680.

You can also find a lot of information, including government and credit agencies on the company's website at this link:

Experts say if you are suspicious any fraudulent activity occurred, cancel the card.

On its website, Target said the issue has been identified and resolved.
