Fatal Tractor Trailer Accident in Bedford County

Bedford County, VA - State police are investigating a deadly tractor trailer crash Thursday night. It happened at 6:00 on Route 43, one-tenth a mile south of Route 707.

State police said a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling northbound on Route 43 when it entered a curve, crossed the center line and struck a southbound tractor trailer head on.

The driver of the Jetta, 33 year old Wendy Sue Rector of Huddleston, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if she was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

A front seat passenger, 19 year old  Kristen Reynolds (also from Huddleston), was airlifted To Roanoke Memorial. Reynolds was wearing a safety belt prior to the crash.

The tractor trailer that was involved in the crash was driven by 42 year old Robert E. Towler of Gretna.

Towler was operating a 2000 Peterbilt tractor with a flatbed trailer which was owned by English Construction located in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Towler was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and was not injured.
