Etowah County superintendent

Posted: Updated:

More than a week after dozens of students experienced respiratory problems at Hokes Bluff Middle School, we still don't know why.

The school was evacuated and has been closed ever since. Etowah County superintendent Dr. Alan Cosby released a statement today. He says the board is working with the Department of Public Health and  environmental specialists.

Cosby says various tests and analyses are still being conducted and are expected to be completed shortly.

Dr. Cosby's statement reads:

"We are continuing to work with the Alabama Department of Public Health, other environmental specialists, as well as mechanical and systems specialists, in order to find an explanation for the events of Thursday, December 12 at Hokes Bluff Middle School. An analysis of environmental samples along with the inspection of various mechanical systems are being completed as part of this process. We currently expect to have all testing and analysis completed shortly and hope to be able to return to the Hokes Bluff Middle School building at the commencement of school after the holidays."
