Fatal Accident in Huddleston Leaves One Woman Dead

Posted:

Huddleston, VA - A Huddleston woman is dead and a 19-year-old is recovering after a crash Thursday night in Bedford County. State Police say 33-year-old Wendy Rector was killed on Route 43 in Huddleston. Her passenger, Kristen Reynolds, was airlifted to Roanoke.

Rescue crews responded to the crash near Lone Oak Crossing around six Thursday night. State Police say Rector entered a curve and crossed the center line, hitting a tractor trailer head on. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt.

Trooper Dayes who responded to the scene Thursday night said they are reconstructing the accident, but it doesn't appear she was speeding. The truck driver told police he tried to miss her, but Rector had her high beams on and he couldn't tell which side of the road she was on until it was too late. Trooper Dayes said the cause may have been distracted driving.

Rector worked at Berglund Ford in Bedford. General Manager Glenn Ward says they are all in shock.

"I think it's a sad day for the community since Wendy was from this area and knows a lot of people. Wendy had a bright future here, she was a great employee, always smiling and everything and she will definitely be sadly missed," said Ward.

At last check, Kristen Reynolds was listed in good condition. Funeral arrangements for Rector have not yet been finalized. State police say it's unclear whether Rector was wearing a seat belt, but her passenger was.
