USPS, UPS and FedEx helping Santa deliver last minute packages

Posted: Updated:

For USPS worker, Lonnie Brewster, it's just another day.

"It has been for 30 years," he said.

It's what he's used to.

"[I] get to meet a lot of people and I'm a people person," he said.

And on Christmas Eve...it's no different.

"Especially when I know it's something for children that's living there and they're surprised, [saying] 'Momma, is that for me'," he said.

All over Birmingham, Tuesday, USPS, UPS and FedEx were all out delivering those last minute packages.

"Yesterday was a wild day," Birmingham Postmaster, Mike Allison said.

Allison says Christmas Eve, alone, about one million Christmas cards and packages will be delivered.

"They'll be in the mailboxes today for the customers," Allison said.

Allison says, surprisingly, the day before Christmas is nowhere near as stressful as the days leading up to Christmas, as far as deliveries are concerned. That's because the bulk of the holiday mail has already been processed.

"We'll redeliver it today to attempt," he said. "Hopefully, on Christmas Eve, more people are at home and we can get them packages in their hand. It gives you the joy to see the people and realize that you have a part in making families happy."

For Brewster...that's his job. Delivering the packages, the smiles and the Christmas cheer to every family on his route.

The USPS will also be delivering Express packages, Christmas Day.
