Harrisburg's new strawberry to ring in 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg is ready to ring in the new year with a new strawberry.

The old fiberglass berry that had been lowered each New Year's Eve fell three stories and was shattered beyond repair last week when a harness snapped during a test run at the Hilton Harrisburg.

The new berry, a combination of steel and fabric covered in LED lights, was built over the weekend and tested Monday.

"It's actually two-dimensional rather than three-dimensional just because of the actual time we had for the strawberry this year, and it's much larger and much brighter," said Blake Lynch, sales manager of the Hilton Harrisburg.

There were a few moments during Monday's practice run when the berry was stirred by the wind, so the drop will be guided by three cables instead of one.

Tomorrow night will be Harrisburg's 25th annual strawberry drop to ring in the new year.
