Driver flees after crash into York church

Posted: Updated:
YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

Members of a York church received some bad news when someone drove a car into their building early Thursday.

The car knocked a large hole into the side of the York City Campus of Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene at 350 Chestnut Street.

Officials said the driver, who was not the owner, fled the scene and left behind the car he had borrowed; the front end still inside a children's classroom.

Pastor Kent Vandervort said there are about 40 children in the room every Sunday.

"Fortunately, nobody's life was involved, nobody was injured," he said. "Buildings can be repaired, but people's lives and futures can be changed through something like this."

Vandervort said the church's insurance will have to cover the cost of repairs because the car owner was not insured.

He said they expect to have repairs completed within the next few weeks.
