SCOTLAND, Pa. (WHTM) -

Two people were killed and five others injured Sunday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash in Franklin County.

According to officials, the incident happened just after 3:30 at mile marker 21 between South Exit 24 - PA 696/Fayette Street (in Southampton Township) and Exit 20 - PA 997 (in Greene Township).

Police said the driver of the first car was traveling northbound when he or she crossed the center median into the southbound lanes.

"It impacted another vehicle that was going southbound head on," said State Police Troopr Robert Hicks. "It killed two people in that vehicle. That impact subsequently pushed the cars into a third vehicle that was carrying two people in that car as well."

Police are not sure why the driver went out of his lanes, although they believe weather may have been a factor.

"The investigating trooper will definitely make contact once they're available--once they're out of the hospital and speak to them and try to find out what occurred."

The identities of the two people killed were not yet being released pending the notification of the next of kin.
