The celebrations have started, Carnival season begins in New Orleans

New Orleans -

The countdown to Mardi Gras has begun.  January 6, was King's Day, or Twelfth Night if you prefer.

Freezing temps were not a deterant to a boisterous group of costume wearing partygoers ringing in the Carnival season in New Orleans.

The Phunny Phorty Phellows club, which first took to the streets in 1878, was one of two groups that paraded Monday night.  Aboard the streetcar, the boisterous and colorful troupe bobbed to a brass band as they tossed beads, candy and trinkets to revelers waiting street-side bundled in coats and scarves.

The 12th night after Christmas is known traditionally for the arrival of the three kings at Jesus' birthplace, ending the Christmas season. In New Orleans this also marks the start of Carnival.

There will be more than 100 parades along the Gulf Coast between now and Mardi Gras, which is March 4.
