A former assistant principal at Susquehanna Township High School is headed to court on charges he had sexual relations with a 16-year-old student.
Shawn A. Sharkey, 45, waived his preliminary hearing before a district judge Wednesday and allowed all counts against him to proceed to county court without contest.
Sharkey was charged Sept. 20 with felony counts of institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors, and unlawful contact with a minor.
The school board accepted his resignation in October.
According to court documents, Sharkey and the girl met for sex at a Harrisburg-area hotel at least 10 times in February and March.
His formal arraignment in Dauphin County Court is scheduled Feb. 14.
The girl and her mother have also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Sharkey, the school district and several high school administrators and teachers.
The lawsuit alleges that at least four teachers reported to administrators that something inappropriate was happening between Sharkey and a student, but none of the allegations were reported to law enforcement or Child Protective Services.
Police charged Sharkey three days after a student reported the relationship to a school resource officer.
The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office is investigating whether anyone in the district knew of the relationship and failed to report it.
