UPDATE: 3:05 p.m.

Ferrum, VA – State Police say a Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy was injured in a shoot-out with two robbery suspects Tuesday night.

According to state police, two armed men entered the home in the 4400 block of Prillaman Switch Road in Ferrum shortly after 10 p.m. and confronted the homeowner. Prior to the shooting, a 911 call had made to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office by someone inside the residence.

The homeowner returned fire, state police say. Sources tell ABC 13 the homeowner hit the suspect in the back.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and Ferrum Police Department responded to the scene to follow up on the 911 hang-up. When they arrived, the two robbers fled on foot. The suspects and law enforcement exchanged gunfire outside the residence, state police say.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, state police say.

The victims inside the home weren't injured, state police say.

ABC 13 has learned that both of the victims say they knew the two suspects through a former caregiver and they were out to get pain medication.

The homeowner and a woman in the home tell ABC 13 the two suspects knew exactly where to find the prescription drugs.

One of the victims says he opened fire on the suspects outside his home and prompted deputies to do the same.

One suspect was hit in the back, though it is unclear who hit the suspect. There is no word on how serious the injury is.

One victim is bedridden and the other is fighting cancer, sources tell ABC 13.

State police have identified the injured suspect as a 31-year-old Henry County man. He was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending against the man, state police say.

The other robbery suspect, Christopher Hardin Jr., 34, of Bassett, fled on foot from the scene. State and local law enforcement immediately surrounded the area to search for Harden. A state police helicopter assisted with the search.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, Hardin was taken into custody without incident. A handgun was recovered.

Hardin is being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail in Salem on one felony count of armed robbery and one count of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

State police seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia from inside the home.

At the request of the Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Salem Field Office Police Shooting Investigative Team is investigating the robbery and officer-involved shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
