Ferrum, VA - A Franklin County couple is shaken up after a home invasion that left a Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy injured Tuesday night.

One suspect is in the hospital with a gunshot wound while the other is in jail.

Christopher Hardin, 31, of Bassett, is charged so far in the case.

One of the victims was assaulted and will likely require some follow up care.

On top of the assault, the two victims were already in very bad shape, medically speaking, and it may be part of the motive for the crime.

Fred "Billy Bob" Bowles says it all happened quickly as he watched TV around 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

"They broke through the door. One had a 9mm Glock, the other a sawed off shotgun," Bowles remembered.

With little choice, Bowles complied.

"There was nothing I could do. This man, a shotgun in my chest, and he had a gun to my head,..." Bowles said.

Bowles says the alleged robbers seemingly went straight for places they knew Bowles kept prescription medication.

Bowles has left than a year to live. He's dying of cancer. He says the suspects also took some $2,000.

"He threatened to shoot me twice and then when the third time came up I just, "Go ahead. Pull the trigger." Instead he blasted me in my jaw," Bowles described.

The men tossed the bedrooms and assaulted Bowles' paraplegic companion, Kris; getting to her gun before she could.

Bowles, however, says he managed to grab his pistol as the crooks ran off, exchanging fire near the front porch.

Law enforcement soon joined in and Bowles retreated.

"The law was lined up the whole 15 acres of my property... I mean they were here just like that. And everybody started shooting. I was shooting. And then when I saw the law there I quit," Bowles explained.

Tipped off from a 9-1-1 hang-up call by Kris, the suspects had no chance.

One suspect ended the night wounded with a non-life threatening injury. The other was found after a manhunt in the nearby woods.

"There was no place to go. They were trapped like The Alamo," Bowles said.

Both victims say they know the assailants through a former medical caretaker.

They say earlier in the week the trio stopped by needing help with a flat tire; something they say makes more sense now.

State Police are in charge of this investigation.

More charges can be expected.
