Power Companies Report Record Usage During Tuesday's Bitter Cold

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Appalachian Power customers in Virginia set an all-time peak demand for power on Tuesday.

The arctic cold helped push electricity consumption to more than 8400 megawatts at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The last record was set on January 16, 2009.

Appalachian Power's president says it's not surprising since these are the coldest temperatures we've had in years.

Meanwhile Dominion Virginia Power hit record winter peak demand for electricity earlier this week, too.

The Richmond-based provider says they had more than 19,000 megawatts on Tuesday.

Dominion also says it established an all-time record for energy usage over a 24-hour period on Tuesday.

Dominion serves 2.4 million customers in Virginia.
