An affidavit released to the public Friday accuses former Homewood pastor Richard Shahan of cutting and stabbing his wife to death at the couple's home last year.

Shahan, 53, is charged with one count of murder for the death of his 52-year-old wife on July 22, 2013. A affidavit submitted by Homewood police and signed by a Jefferson County District Court judge says, "Richard Lee Shahan did intentionally cause the death of another person, Karen Louise Shahan, by stabbing and cutting the victim with an unknown object..."

One day after being extradited from Tennessee following his New Year's Day arrest at the Nashville International Airport, the former associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Birmingham made a brief court appearance via video Thursday, listening to a judge read him the murder charge against him. Shahan continues to be held in the county jail without bond.
