Wintergreen Adaptive Sports Hosts Snowfest

Wintergreen, VA -  Lots of people had fun in the snow this weekend. Wintergreen Resort hosted their first ever Snowfest celebration. A portion of lift ticket sales from the weekend will go to Wintergreen Adaptive Sports. The program focuses on instruction for people with physical disabilities.

"We have a dedicated core of instructors that is really unmatched in this area," said David Shreve, the Executive Director of Wintergreen Adaptive Sports.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports has a winter program that gives more than 600 lessons to nearly 150 students.

"It's offered her a wonderful opportunity to get out, get out of her wheelchair, get out and do some real physical activity," said Anne Stout whose daughter is an adaptive skier.

Savannah Stout has Spina Bifida but has been skiing since she was six-years-old. Now 21, she still loves the sport.

"People that have disabilities can go out and have a great time and not be stuck in the house," said Stout.

Seth Whitten has worked with the program for seven years.

"To be able to keep getting better and measure that progress is something that really is an affirmation and is exciting," said Whitten.

He was injured when he was 14-years-old, now 33, he loves seeing others overcome their disabilities and have fun.

"It's a really good way for them to see that yes, their lives have changed, but there is still a whole world out there, and it opens doors for people," said Whitten.

This weekend, adaptive skiers gave demonstrations, enjoyed live music and even watched a documentary on four adaptive skiers who have influenced the sport.

"We had a great weekend," said Shreve.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports will have another event the last weekend of this month. They will host wounded warriors and their families January 24th - 26th.
