Altavista Man Dies in Campbell Co. Crash

Campbell Co., VA – An Altavista man died in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning, State Police said.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper B.S. May, a 2007 Jeep Liberty was traveling along Route 628 when it ran off the road and went down an embankment. The Jeep then struck two trees.

The crash occurred around 2:06 a.m., police say, about a mile and a half north of Route 43, State Police said.

The driver, Walter L. Chapman III, 46, died at the scene. Chapman was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
