PennDOT: 60 percent of winter budget used already

Posted: Updated:

The Midstate is still on the front end of winter, and PennDOT has already used up 60 percent of its seasonal budget. If that goes over, it can compromise springtime roadwork.

However, it wont delay dealing with those pesky potholes, although patching doesn't traditionally start until April when asphalt can be laid.

Repairs have already started.

PennDOT is using special cold mix to plug holes caused by the expanding and contracting pavement.

As Maintenance Director Richard Roman says, snow control isn't their only winter task.

"The county crews are out there doing brush cutting. They are doing signing, they are doing pothole patching recently now because of the fluctuations in the temperatures."

Roman says that even though they only have 40 percent of their budget to work with, he feels they are right where they need to be for this time of year.

Unless, of course, extreme weather presses on.
