Amherst Co., VA - Cordell Carter will remain in jail after turning himself in Wednesday morning. Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers says Carter is being held without bond and will not have a bond hearing.
Ayers says 30-year-old Jennifer Johnson died of a gunshot wound. Both of her sons were inside the home on South Amherst Highway at the time. Ayers says one of the sons, who is six-years-old, is a child Johnson and Carter had together.
Witnesses tell the Sheriff's Office that the couple had a rocky relationship, which included a domestic call in November 2012. Sheriff Ayers says there is a record of deputies serving a protective order at that address but they don't know who it was against.
