Selma leaders release land in confederate monument suit

Posted: Updated:

The protests of Selma residents failed to stop city council from releasing an acre of land to group that plans to build a controversial confederate monument.

In a 5 - 4 vote, the Selma City Council released control of the cemetery land to The Daughters of the Confederacy. The vote ends a lawsuit filed against the city by Virginia-based KTK Mining Company.  The suit was filed after city leaders stopped construction of a monument intended to memorialize a confederate general and former Ku Klux Klan member.

Angry protesters continued to chant outside the meeting room, after police escorted them into the hallway.

A settlement also requires the city to pay the company $100,000.
