Midstate snow means big business for tow companies

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Around the Midstate, places like HJ Towing & Recovery stayed busy on Tuesday answering calls for help.

The company had more than 20 calls before noon alone.

In Cumberland County, all 43 PennDOT trucks were out, plows to the road and spreading salt. Their goal was to make sure roads were passable for the commute home.

Their concern moving forward is winds causing drifting, and that is why they have a piece of equipment called a grater: The vehicle has a V-plow on the front and a benching wing to tackle problem spots.

"We call this in when we have drifts that are over 3 feet; sometimes we have drifts that are 10 feet high where a truck with a straight plow cannot get through. Then we bring this in," said Manager Dan Storm of Cumberland County PennDOT.

Crews will be out until midnight.
