Volunteers Count Homeless Population in Lynchburg

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - As many deal with another round of bitter cold temperatures, volunteers are busy in Lynchburg getting more information about those who don't have a warm place to call home.

Thursday marks the annual "point in time" count, when information is gathered about the homeless population, and sent to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development.

Last year, about 150 people here where defined as homeless. Most were in shelters.

"We'll be going out into the streets, Miller Park, a lot of the streets downtown and try to see if there are folks outside who are homeless," said Cindy Sommers with the Point In Time Committee.

"What we do for the point in time homeless count is have all of our member congregations donate toiletries so that people who do participate in the survey, they are able to have a nice gift," added Shawne Farmer, Interfaith Outreach.

Farmer says the homeless need the supplies because many have health problems, especially with the skin, due to being out in cold weather.
