MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Governor Robert Bentley has declared a State of Emergency for all counties in Alabama due to a threatening shortage of propane gas as blistering cold weather sets in across the state.

"With life threatening cold temperatures expected once again, it is important for Alabamians to have the necessary heating resources available for survival," Bentley said in a release Thursday evening. "This State of Emergency will help Alabamians have an uninterrupted supply of propane gas and other home heating fuels during this period of winter weather."

The declaration of the emergency means Bentley will be able to enact various precautionary and/or preparedness measures, including the state's price gouging law. Also, rules and regulations related to the purchase and sale of propane gas in the industry have been suspended, allowing gas tank owners to buy propane from any company. The federal transportation motor carrier laws have also been lifted, allowing "greater flexibility in the delivery to homes, schools and businesses."
