HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Special Olympics PA - Area M has postponed its 2014 Harrisburg Polar Bear Plunge. The event, originally scheduled for February 1, will now be held on February 22.

Program Director Kristie Davis notes that is was a difficult decision to make, but one that Mother Nature forced, in the name of safety.

"As you may have heard, there are stacks of ice on the "beach" of City Island preventing us from reaching the river at this time. With the potential for more snow/ice, very cold temperatures in the coming week and the river rapidly freezing, it is not safe for us to try to remove the ice at this time," Davis said in an email to participants.

The group's back-up location of Pinchot Park was unable to be used because of high levels of the lake and frozen portions of the lake.

Special Olympics PA - Area M will appear on abc27's Good Day PA on Monday, January 27 to take more about the annual event.
