Veno comes up with adjusted recovery plan

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Gene Veno, the School Recovery Officer for the Harrisburg District, explained the parts of his amended recovery plan that reflected the extra $11 million that was discovered by the district last year.

The updated plan will restore 2.5 percent of the 5 percent reduction that district employees incurred at the beginning of 2012-13. That did not sit well with the teachers and district employees that had come to the meeting.

"When you look at all of the things that we've lost...it was all based on a piece of fiction, and that really stuck in the craw of every single individual that works in this district," said Sherri Magnuson, the President of the Harrisburg Education Association.

"We want to work with the district," she said. "We want to work with the CRO. But we want to do what's fair and what's right."

"I think it's a fair plan," said Veno. "The recalibrated plan is fair for everybody. And as I said, the taxpayers of this district, they're the stockholders, and this has to address them."

To that end, there will be no tax increase.

"My fiduciary responsibility to this district is to see that in 2018 you are fiscally sound," he told the school board and the people that attended the special Friday night meeting.

The proposal still has to be approved by the school board and then by the PA Board of Education.
