A 16-year-old boy is in state police custody following a shooting incident Sunday morning on Interstate 81 south in Greene Township, Franklin County.
Police said they tried to initiate a traffic stop near mile marker 18 at around 7:00 a.m., when the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala displayed a .22 caliber and fired one round toward the approaching trooper.
The trooper retreated behind a vehicle and returned fire. The driver, Sean Patrick Sellers of Mifflinburg, then surrendered without incident, according to police.
Upon later investigation, troopers said they discovered Sellers had stolen both the weapon and the car from a home in Mifflinburg, and it's unclear why he was driving in Franklin County.
Sellers faces several counts, including attempted homicide and aggravated assault on a police officer. Troopers said he will be charged as an adult.
The southbound lanes reopened just after 12:30 p.m.
