Franklin County, VA – The investigation of a house fire on Smith Mountain Lake has been turned over to the Franklin County fire marshal's office.
The fire broke out at a waterfront home on Carrs Point Lane just before 8:30p.m., Friday. Fire crews responded from Franklin, Bedford, and Pittsylvania Counties. Firefighters remained on the scene until around 5:30a.m., Saturday.
Extremely low temperatures and wind worked against firefighters' efforts. Water pumps froze up as firefighters attempted to pull water from the lake to put out the fire. Wind carried hot embers to nearby structures.
The fire marshal says the cause is still under investigation, and an insurance company representative will visit the site this week.
The home was not occupied at the time of the fire. The fire marshal says the owner lives in another part of the county.
