Dallas is striving to join Phoenix and Salt Lake City in providing access to stable and permanent housing to every single one of the city's homeless veterans. The city is actively working with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and numerous other community members in solving the homelessness problem. Assistance is provided through the HUD-VASH program, a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the VA. In 2012, there were 409 homeless veterans living on Dallas streets and shelters. While that number is lower than the estimated 555 homeless veterans in 2011, there is still work ahead to get to zero.
