Area hardware stores seeing salt shortage

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

If you're looking to stock up on some salt for the second round of winter weather this week, you might have a tougher search than you thought.

For some stores, Monday's demand for rock salt has put it in short supply.

The Home Depot stores in the Harrisburg area are all out. Workers at the location off Derry Street in Swatara Township said they will get restocked later in the week, but there's no word when.

There's a reason for the holdup.

"A national salt shortage in general. It's not just Home Depot, it's the salt suppliers with all the winter weather and the extreme weather," said Terry Benton, assistant store manager at Home Depot said.

We checked in at Lowes nearby, but it didn't have any either.

As of Monday evening, Hornung's Hardware did have salt available to customers, but they said supply was depleting.

You may want to turn to sand, cat little or light gravel if you need to get by.
