Local Teen Pushes for Plus-Sized Disney Princess

Farmville, VA - A local teen is receiving national attention for her petition challenging Disney to make a plus-size princess.

Jewel Moore, a high school student in Farmville, started the petition. Online, she's already collected more than 18,000 signatures.

Moore says she started the petition to see a positive representation of plus-sized women in the media. So far, girls of all shapes and sizes approve of her mission.

In 2009, Disney introduced their first African-American Princess Tiana.

Now, a Farmville teen is petitioning the media giant to break another barrier. Jewel Moore, 17, wants Disney to create a plus-size princess.

Moore's petition, which was started a little over a week ago, has gone viral at 18,000 signatures and counting.

In her petition Moore writes, "It would be revolutionary for Disney to show support to a group of girls who are otherwise horrendously bullied by the media…I would just like to see a princess with a different body shape. Where's the pear-shaped princess? The short princess? The chubby princess?"

Pre-school teacher and mom Elizabeth Exum gives the petition a big thumbs up.

"I think it is a wonderful Idea, especially for their self-esteem," Exum said. "It's always good to build self-esteem from a little age on up."

While many have praised Moore, others are more critical. They worry the idea could promote obesity.

Moore, however, says it's not just about the size. She says it's about having a full-figured princess who is as bright, amazing, and memorable as others.
