Danville Residents React To CVS President's Decision To Pull Tobacco Products

Posted:

Danville, VA - CVS customers will soon see some changes inside their local stores.

CVS Pharmacy President Helena Foulkes says the chain will no longer carry tobacco products in their 7,600 locations.

In Danville, some say this will hurt the company's profits, but Foulkes says the multi-billion dollar financial hit will not deter them.

"We thought long and hard about the two billion dollars in revenue, and at the end of the day, there is a much bigger part that we can play in healthcare system."

Andy Foster has used tobacco products for 20 years, but he praises the company's decision.

"I support their idea of not having tobacco products available where you are selling prescription drugs," Foster said.

Foster works in the medical industry and knows firsthand how expensive healthcare has become. He says anything to help curtail smoking-related illness is a good thing.

"The idea is to promote good health and the use of tobacco is something we all need to cut back on or quite altogether," Foster said.

Some say CVS may be starting a new trend for other retail chains, depending on their success.

"If it works out for CVS, I think Walgreens and other pharmacies will follow suit," said Danville resident Stewart Robertson.

Foster just hopes fewer stores with cigarettes on the shelves will help people like him kick the habit.
