Governor Tom Corbett signed a disaster emergency proclamation Wednesday night.
It's meant to assist state and local authorities recover from the ice storm.
Corbett said the recovery will be long but the disaster declaration will speed up state assistance. The Pa. National Guard has also been mobilized.
"The declaration allows us to tap into our emergency funds related to the availability of the Guard, to opening shelters and providing generators where needed," Corbett said.
Corbett said four state-operated shelters have opened up in Lancaster County, four have opened in York County, and one has opened in Adams County.
