Richard and Ila Stare have been married for more than 62 years. They have been through a lot together, but nothing quite like losing power in their home they have shared for more than three decades.
The Stares decided to check into a hotel last week because they were not comfortable staying in their home when the temperature fell below 40 degrees inside. They stayed at the Hampton Inn in York for three days, and on Saturday a neighbor told them their lights were back on.
The Stares stayed one more night at the hotel before returning home on Sunday.
Ila Stare says she had to throw away a lot of food that spoiled while they were gone, but she says they fared better than other people who were staying at the same hotel.
"One man had a fire in his basement," said Stare. "Another man had his basement full of water, so we were lucky."
The Stares say they are glad to be home, but if they lose power again, they will not hesitate to check in at the same hotel.
