Winter putting a financial strain on municipalities

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, Pa. (WHTM) -

There is no business like snow business. This winter it isn't cheap. Area municipalities are already feeling financial strain from the wild weather.

Columbia Borough in Lancaster County said workers' overtime is racking up and salt supplies are depleting.

"We budget for about 125 tons of salt, we are at twice that now. We have enough for maybe two more moderate storms, but that is about it,"Columbia Borough Manager Samuel Sulkosky said.

Columbia is not alone when it comes to potentially shelling out extra because of winter storms.

In Mechanicsburg,  borough officials say they are over budget for both salt and overtime. They may have to put some maintenance projects on hold because of it.

Middletown received a shipment of 20 tons of salt late last week and already has more ordered. There's no word on the possible budget strain there.

In York County, Fairview Township said it went through about 100 tons of salt over the past week. They have some in its reserves, but are expecting to get 400 tons more this week. Township officials say they are over budget.

Its all, unfortunately, part the unpredictable and costly snow business.

"You deal with it as it happens," Sulkosky said.
