Mother held for trial in fatal shooting of 8-year-old son

The mother of an 8-year-old boy who was fatally shot by his younger brother over the Labor Day weekend has been held for trial.

A district judge during a preliminary hearing Tuesday found enough evidence against 33-year-old Jessica Pfaff to forward all charges against her to Cumberland County court.

Pfaff, of Greencastle, is scheduled for a formal arraignment April 24 on charges of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of endangering the welfare of children, and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Pfaff's son died at a hospital four days after the Sept. 1 shooting at her boyfriend's home in Southampton Township, where Pfaff had been staying with her two children.

Her 6-year-old son told police he retrieved a loaded handgun from the mattress in the master bedroom and shot his brother, then shook his sleeping mother because she did not hear the gunshot, according to court records.

He told officers that the gun should have been put away, and that he "told Mommy to put it where I couldn't reach it," documents state.

Pfaff was not taking any action to care for her injured son when troopers responded to the home, appeared lethargic, and at one point climbed back into bed, police said in the court papers.

She told troopers she was prescribed at least 14 medications that she took daily, and later admitted that she snorted her prescription pills through a straw and gave her medications to others, documents state.

In court papers, authorities said the home had deplorable conditions, a strong odor of animal feces, and was cluttered with debris and boxes.
