Snow causes roof collapse at Lewisberry fire station

Posted: Updated:
LEWISBERRY, Pa. (WHTM) -

Winter storms today and last week are blamed for a roof collapse this afternoon at the Fairview Township Fire Department's station in Lewisberry.

Part of the roof over the social hall collapsed at around 2:30 p.m. under the weight of today's snowfall and the snow and ice left from last week's storm, dropping snow, wood and shingles on top of chairs and tables.

No one was injured and the fire equipment stored in the building at 105 West Front Street was not damaged.

"As a firefighter, it's a little shocking when you look at your pager and it's your fire department," Fairview Township Fire Chief Chris Weidenhammer said. "Our first concern was our equipment and if it was damaged or not."

The trucks have been removed from the station and the building has been condemned.

The Fairview Township Fire Department will continue to operate out of two other stations.

Weidenhammer said that without the Lewisberry station, response times may be increased in the southern part of the township.

"With the weather, obviously the southern end of our township is a concern and having our station down here reduces response times, especially with snow and ice," he said.
