HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Pennsylvania's auditor general says the Steelton-Highsire School District has a $2.7 million budget deficit and will face state intervention unless there is significant improvement.

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said a recent audit found that Steel-High's budget deficit has continued to grow in each of the four years since 2009, when the district was in the red by more than $500,000.

He said the district's financial problems stem in part from its failure to control expenses, a high real estate tax delinquency rate, and payments to charter schools that now total more than $916,000 a year.

DePasquale said the audit additionally found professional certification deficiencies for 20 staff members, or 15 percent of its professional employees.

He said Steel-High also failed to maintain criminal history records for 20 bus drivers, and instead relied on the records of a neighboring school district that uses the same contractor.

DePasquale said his office made 21 recommendations to help the school district avoid a state takeover.

The audit is available online at www.auditorgen.state.pa.us/Reports/School.html.
