Soldier Surprises Wife After Deployment

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA--After nearly a year in Afghanistan a local soldier came home Saturday night surprising his wife. Our ABC-13 cameras were there for their special reunion of Sgt. James Lawrie and his wife.

Mrs. Lawrie thought we were interviewing her about her excitement to see her husband later that night. But little did she know, Mr. Lawrie was getting home early to give her a homecoming she would never forget.

It's been three years of marriage and nearly twelve months of only Skype and emails for James and Ashley Lawrie. Nothing could compare to the moment they saw each other again. Despite connecting flights and schedule changes, Sgt. Lawrie made it home just in time. He told his wife he'd arrive in Roanoke late Saturday night. She made welcome signs and recruited a group of friends and family to meet him at the airport.

"I could barely breathe, really, " said Sgt. Lawrie

"It was just amazing to see him so soon. It wasn't you know in a crowded airport- it was just kinda, you know, more private," said Ashley.

The change in plan did just what Sgt. Lawrie hoped it would.

"It's just phenomenal that he would think of me and you know try to surprise me cause I know that was for me. You know if everybody had met in the airport and had all the signs that would have been for him but he put himself aside and put me first and made the surprise for me and it just meant the world to me," said Ashley.

Now that he is back the first thing he wanted to do?

"Go to cookout, and we did. And it was just as amazing as it always was," said Sgt. Lawrie.

Sgt. Lawrie is on leave for the next few months. After that he will serve a weekend a month and two full weeks a year in the Virginia National Guard. His wife says they plan to stay home together often and may plan a trip to Disney World where they went on their honeymoon.
