UPDATE: Community Helping Troutville Family Displaced by Fire

Posted:

Troutville, VA - A Botetourt County couple and their four kids lost their home in a fire Sunday night.

Now their friends are started an online campaign to help the family rebuild.

Less than a day after fire consumed the Funk home, Lindsey Funk picked a picture of her daughter, Maylia, from the soot.

Maylia was in bed watching TV when she noticed smoke coming from the master bedroom next door.

Marshall Funk was outside playing with his other three children.

"I went inside and looked she was right... it was on fire. I got everybody out and went back inside to try to put it out with the fire extinguisher," Marshall Funk said.

Funk thought he had extinguished the fire.

"It kept burning. Apparently inside the wall. I thought I had it out... visually what I could see out," Funk continued.

Now the family of six is left with almost nothing.

Before the family could even begin salvaging what they could, friends were already on the move.

Dan Lucas went right to Facebook, where word spread quickly.

"There are just times when you see faces of the kids and the family. People... their hearts come out and they want to do everything they can to help," Lucas explained.

Another friend took the cause to gofundme.com and by Monday afternoon, after just 15 hours, more than $3,000 of a $5,000 goal was already committed.

"It surprises me and then it doesn't. People are inherently, I think, have big hearts and they want to help out families in need and this family definitely has a need," Lucas said.

The good news is, the Funks are insured. The bad news is right now they are spread out all over the Roanoke Valley and are in need of medium range housing for six near Cloverdale.
