Orficast™ offers an easy way to provide support and/ or protection with unmatched patient comfort and ease of use

JERICHO, N.Y., Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Orfit Industries America, North American subsidiary of Orfit Industries, a world leader in the development, and manufacture of thermoplastic splinting materials today announced that it has launched Orficast™, a new moldable thermoplastic for simple finger splints, thumb splints and supportive bandage wraps. This stretchable, self-adhesive textile is knitted from thermoplastic fibers and comes in both blue and black colors in 2 widths.

Orficast™ is the ideal material for simple finger splints, thumb splints and supportive bandage wraps. It provides excellent ventilation for wound care treatment, and is ideal for serial casting and small orthotic applications (circular finger splints, thumb and toe splints, etc.). Orficast™ is first softened in a matter of seconds in hot water and then can be molded directly onto the patient while the knitted structure allows skin ventilation. The material can also be cut to length and shape with regular scissors and applied directly on the skin without the need for protective gloves or lotion.

"Orfit's R&D team developed this radically innovative product completely in-house using new production technology. Orficast™ offers quick and easy, yet rigid customized immobilization without the need to use gloves or a casting saw, as is the case with other synthetic casting materials," said Steven Cuypers, CEO of Orfit Industries. "Our vision is to provide the best possible solution to patients everywhere in the world. Orficast™ is both comfortable and easy to apply, a win-win for occupational and physical therapists, trainers and other health care professionals."

Since Orficast is self-adhesive, it can be easily stretched in two directions around a joint to create a perfectly fitting circular splint or cast. Thanks to its 100 percent thermoplastic memory, the material can be unwrapped, re-heated and the splint can be re-shaped and re-applied. With this unique feature, the same material can be reused throughout treatment for serial splinting or casting. In addition to its biocompatibility, Orficast™ has a soft touch feeling and soft edges, providing unmatched patient comfort. The ingeniously knitted structure keeps the material breathable so that perspiration can escape. Currently, Orficast™ comes in two widths: 3 cm for finger and toe injuries, and 6 cm for thumb injuries.

Orficast Thermoplastic splints/ casts can be used to treat many different types of injuries, including:

  • Restriction of range of motion providing relative rest in case of arthritis, overuse, and tendon injuries such as mallet-or PIP joint injuries and CMC joint (thumb)
  • Corrective immobilization in arthritic conditions such as swan neck and boutonniere deformities
  • Post-operative protective treatment of the fingers (MCP, PIP and DIP joints) and thumb (CMC joint)
  • Post-traumatic curative and protective splinting in case of sprains, bruises and fractures of thumb and finger
  • Activating the Orficast tape with dry heat allows for the making of larger and multi-layered splints for the wrist and ankle.
