Gov. Corbett recuperating after hernia surgery

Posted: Updated:

Governor Tom Corbett has been released from a Pittsburgh hospital where he underwent surgery for an abdominal hernia this morning.

His office said Corbett will recuperate for a few days at his home in Shaler, in suburban Pittsburgh, and he is expected to return to Harrisburg by Monday.

The procedure at Allegheny General Outpatient Surgical Center was considered to be routine and Corbett's doctor described the procedure as successful, according to a spokesman.

Lt. Gov. James Cawley was acting governor for about an hour-and-a-half while Corbett was under general anesthesia.

Corbett, 64, was awake and alert by 8:35 a.m. and physicians cleared him to resume the powers and duties of his office, his office said.

A spokesman said recent physical examinations have shown Corbett to be in excellent health.
