The southbound lanes of Interstate 83 in York County near Exit 4 reopened early Sunday morning.
According to PennDOT officials, the road was in bad shape due to a deteriorating drainage pipe undermining the pavement.
On Friday evening, construction crews shut down just one lane to begin repairs, but soon realized the road condition was much worse they thought. Crews then decided to shut down both lanes.
Crews reopened the roadway Sunday around 1 a.m.
PennDOT estimated that between 19,000 and 20,000 vehicles travel on that portion of southbound I-83 on a daily basis.
Crews believe the work should be done by the end of the weekend.
