Pa. bill takes aim at variable rate electricity plans

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Legislation pending in the state House of Representatives would impose new rules for the variable rate electricity plans.

Rep. Matt Baker (R-Bradford/Tioga) said the legislation is in response to thousands of complaints from Pennsylvanians who have seen their electricity bills skyrocket this winter.

Baker, a co-sponsor of the legislation, said the bill would place a cap on how much a rate may change.

The measure also would prohibit cancellation and early termination fees for variable rate contracts and reduce the amount of time it takes to switch electric generation suppliers.

Current and historic electricity rates would have to be posted on the papowerswitch.com website.

Baker said the House Consumer Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing to gather more information on the issue March 20.
