Pittsylvania Co. School Board Wins Woodlawn Property in Chatham

Posted:

Chatham, VA - It was the day Pittsylvania County Schools had been waiting for. Monday, the school system won the bid for the former Woodlawn Academy property in Chatham.

The school board had been trying for months to secure the property for a new STEM academy for Pittsylvania County students.

Last year, the school board worked out a contract with the owners of the 8 acres of property and facilities that had been leased to the Carlisle School.

When the Board of Supervisors weren't ready to foot the bill, the owners then chose to go through a bidding process.

Superintendent James McDaniel says, after looking over the budget, additional end of the year funds were found to purchase the property.

McDaniel says the facility will provide a hands-on education experience in math, engineering and a variety of other disciplines.

"Having a centrally located site, we can bring students to that site. It provides for us a phenomenal opportunity to help educate our students to meet the needs of 21st century expectations, " said McDaniel.

The board is hoping to receive grants from local organizations to help off-set the purchase cost.
