UPDATE: 12:16 p.m.

The National Weather Service has canceled the Winter Weather Advisory and the Winter Storm Warning for the area today.

A wintry mix will continue into the early afternoon before tapering off by mid afternoon.

UPDATE 5:52 a.m.

Moderate to heavy snow has totaled over 2-4" in Southside with snow still falling early Friday morning.

A warm nose of air has changed the snow over to sleet for areas further east around Danville, but the warm nose never made it into sections of Henry, Franklin, and Patrick Counties, where the highest snowfall amounts can be found.

Snow finally made it to Lynchburg, Roanoke, and the New River Valley late last night, but well after Southside already had a solid coating on the ground.

The snow and sleet will continue this morning before tapering off this afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Southside, with Winter Weather Advisories up elsewhere.

UPDATE: 10:11 p.m.

Danville, VA - Snow has coated most of Southside as the area rides a very fine line between wintry weather and just rain.

Most areas south of 460 will continue to see snow and sleet overnight. Accumulations of 1-2" are likely, mainly in Southside with locally higher amounts possible in locations where the sleet doesn't mix in as fast.

The snow and sleet will move across greater Lynchburg and Roanoke through the night.

The wintry weather will continue into Friday morning before ending.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of the ABC 13 Viewing Area. For Danville and Southside, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect.

Many roads are already slick across Southside. Be careful if you must travel!

----------

Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for late tonight and Friday morning for southern sections, including Danville, South Boston and Martinsville.

Tonight into Friday an area of low pressure moves through the eastern Carolinas. This brings our region areas of precipitation late tonight through Friday afternoon. Overnight temperatures fall into the upper 20s, with a mix of snow, ice and rain developing after midnight. The wintry mix continues through mid morning Friday. Late morning frozen precipitation becomes all liquid. Accumulations will be light (1" or less), most of which will be on grassy/elevated surfaces. Some slick roadways are possible early Friday morning.

Late Friday the storm system pulls away, setting the stage for a much nicer weekend.
