CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Carlisle Police Department's K-9 will be better protected in the line of duty through the help of a nonprofit organization that provides ballistic vests to law enforcement dogs across the country.

The department announced Thursday that K-9 "Pedro" will receive a bullet and stab resistant vest from Massachusetts-based Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc.

Pedro's handler, Officer Christopher Darhower, began looking for a vest sponsorship after attending funeral services for K-9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department, who died from stab wounds received in the line of duty.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. reached out to Darhower and offered to help.

The nonprofit last year provided ballistic vests for 163 law enforcement dogs in 30 different states, and since 2009 has provided 585 law enforcement dogs in 39 states with protective vests.

Pedro, a 3-year-old German shepherd/Belgian Malinois, is certified in narcotics detection, tracking, apprehension, and patrol-related functions.
