MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

An Elizabethtown man was arrested after he returned to a Middletown store for a backpack full of stolen snack food, police said.

Middletown police said they discovered the apparently abandoned backpack behind the Giant food store on East Main Street Friday night and watched while 25-year-old John Gabriel returned to apparently retrieve it.

Gabriel spotted the officers and began to walk away, but was stopped and found to have energy drinks, packages of meat and other products in his shirt and jacket, police said.

The items in the backpack and in Gabriel's possession were apparently stolen from the Giant and a Rite Aid store, police said.

Gabriel was taken into custody on outstanding warrants issued for other offenses in Dauphin County. He was also charged with retail theft.
