Woman rescued from thawing ice of Susquehanna River

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A woman was rescued after she went out on the ice covering the Susquehanna River near the Market Street bridge in Harrisburg this afternoon.

Rescuers reached the woman and instructed her to lay down in order to spread out her weight, but Fire Chief Brian Enterline said any weight on the thawing ice could have been deadly.

"It's fragile out there," Enterline said. "There was a bunch of cracks. The guys were tethered off to lines to folks back on the shore to tend to those lines. That way, if someone did fall through the ice, we would be able to pull them back out."

The woman was taken into custody by city police.
