A former official at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Cumberland County has been charged in the theft of more than $73,000, according to police.
Robert Joseph Wood Jr., 50, of Carlisle, was quartermaster of VFW Post 477 in North Middleton Township when he allegedly embezzled organization funds between May 2011 and June 2012, township police said.
As quartermaster, Wood acted as treasurer of the post at 2104 W. Trindle Road.
According to charging documents, he admitted to police that he withdrew post funds, deposited some of the money into his personal bank account and used the rest to pay personal bills, but could not remember how much he took.
Police said their investigation into Wood began after he left the quartermaster position and post officials discovered he had withdrawn cash to reimburse himself for food at various conventions above the $50 per day allowance.
Wood surrendered before a district judge Tuesday and was arraigned on charges of theft, money laundering, receiving stolen property, and unlawful use of computer.
He was released on $5,000 unsecured bail, pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 14.
